Distractions while driving are one of the main causes of car accidents. There is an even bigger problem behind the wheel than just conversing and texting on cell phones and that is eating and drinking. According to a study, 80% of all car accidents and 65% of “close calls” are caused by distracted drivers who are more focused on their fast food burger rather than the road.
The prime eating time is in the morning. This is when the most food-related accidents occur because people are rushing to work and do not have time to eat their breakfast at home. However, the study puts the most popular food distractions in this order: coffee(being the worst), soup, tacos, chili, hamburgers, barbecue ribs and wings, fried chicken, jelly donuts, soda, and chocolate.
Eating is not only the issue. Fumbling around with wrappers, adding sweeteners or creamers to hot beverages, putting straws in soft drinks, devoting one arm and hand for handling food or drink, and adding condiments to sandwiches and burgers is. In addition, drivers who are eating or drinking face the risk of very messy or very hot spills which is also a major distraction, as it can unable ones ability to focus on the road.
Any form of distraction should be avoided, or at least kept to a minimum. Just like texting while driving, eating and drinking can wait! Pull over at a rest stop or wait until you reach your destination. One key fact that all drivers should remember is that no matter how much experience you have had, driving is difficult and dangerous.
